Eligibility Ruling

2013-14 SeasonSeptember 16, 2013
Facts: Keith Hansen of RDC has self-reported a violation involving Cassidy Anderson of the Women’s Hockey team. Both RDC and Ms. Anderson were under the impression that Ms. Anderson had completed eighteen (18) credit hours last academic year. However, it turns out that Ms. Anderson, in fact, only completed fifteen (15) credit hours, rendering her academically ineligible for the current semester. With RDC under the impression that Ms. Anderson was eligible, she competed in non-conference games on September 7, 2013 against St. Francis Xavier Academy and the Lloydminster Steelers and on September 8, 2013 against the Sherwood Park Fury, all resulting in RDC victories. Ruling: It is clear that RDC inadvertently used an ineligible player during the above three games. Accordingly, Article I Section 5 Rule 10.1 applies: 10.1. Use of an Ineligible Student-Athlete Where it has been determined that a member institution is in violation of the rules of eligibility and has used an ineligible student-athlete, other than as identified in Article 10.2, the Commissioner shall exercise his or her discretion to determine an appropriate sanction. (Amended October, 2011) Under the circumstances, based on the use of an ineligible athlete, RDC shall forfeit the results of all three (3) of the non-conference victories in question. Taking into account that were this simply an administrative error, the Operating Code would have called for an automatic fine of $500, RDC is also hereby fined $750, payable forthwith to the ACAC Office. Sincerely,
