CASE: Protest of Rescheduled Match and Request for Compensation

( Commissioner's Rulings )

June, 2006 - Commissioner's Casebook

(O.C. Art I, Sec 14, 1.4)
An ACAC college was planning an open house event and wanted to showcase their athletic department. A volleyball league game was scheduled for that weekend and the host college wanted to have the teams playing in the gymnasium during the open house. The visiting college wanted to reschedule the match because their men’s volleyball team was short of players due to illness and injury. The visiting college did not want the expense of only sending their women’s team and then later sending their men’s team to play their match since the travel distance was extensive.

RULING:

It was concluded that all team coaches had agreed to reschedule the matches for a later date and therefore, the host team could not enter a protest but instead a request for compensation. The request for compensation was denied. When colleges plan special events such as this showcase, all visiting institutions must be approached beforehand and informed of the significance of the event. The visiting college was assessed a $200 fine to the ACAC league for initiating a late schedule change ($50 per game, 4 games rescheduled).
