CASE: Gross Misconduct - Sanction Reduced

( Commissioner's Rulings )

2002-03 Season

(O.C. Art I, Sec 14, 8.2.2, 8.1.2)
A player was assessed a gross misconduct for leaving the dressing room after the game and returning to make disrespectful comments to an official.

RULING:

He was originally assessed a 3 game suspension as per the O.C. The ruling was appealed with the athlete submitting a statement of remorse for his actions and the athlete’s “clean” record to date was considered. The suspension was reduced to 2 games.

SEE ALSO:  A case involving a match penalty occurred in the same season. A player was given a match penalty for spearing with intent to injure. The college appealed the match penalty by submitting a video tape with the incident. It was determined that there was not a forceful jabbing by the player and that the player who was injured at the time returned to the game 5-6 minutes later. Instead of a suspension for the match penalty, the infraction was recorded as a game misconduct. Fewer penalties were also applied in 2003-04 (Phipps) when an athlete was assessed a match penalty for attempting to kick an opponent. The athlete was only given a 2 game suspension because there was no contact or injury to the opposing team member. In 2004-05 (Phipps) a player was assessed a match penalty for checking an opponent from behind into the boards. This also resulted in a 2 game suspension.
