CASE: Match Penalty Causing Injury

( Commissioner's Rulings )

2005-06 Season

(O.C. Art I, Sec 14, 8.2)
A player was involved in a very dangerous hit from behind causing an opponent unable to protect himself to fall head first into the boards.  The opposing player suffered a significant cut to his mouth requiring 12 stitches, and symptoms of a concussion.  The injured will at a minimum miss one game.

RULING:

The player was given a 5 game suspension, which is higher than the normal three game suspension.  Although the injuries to the player was significant, they could have been worse added to the fact that the team was trailing 4-0 with just over 10 minutes left in the third period of an exhibition game.  This was the governing factors imposing a much higher suspension.
