CASE: Name on the Score Sheet

( Commissioner's Rulings )

June, 2002 - Commissioner's Casebook

(O.C. Art I, Sec 5, 1.3.1, 1.3.2)
A student-athlete attending an Alberta university had his name recorded on a regular season score sheet for volleyball in a game against another university team however, the athlete did not actually play in that game. The student then withdrew from university and enrolled at an ACAC college that same season.

RULING:

The student’s name appeared on the official volleyball score sheet at the university and as a result, the appearance of the student’s name on the game report is interpreted as indicating participation in that game. The athlete therefore, used up one year of eligibility. The student was ruled ineligible to play volleyball in the ACAC during that same season.

NOTE: This case also refers to O.C. Art I, Sec 5, 1.6 which no longer exists in the O.C.

SEE ALSO: A similar case in hockey (2001-02, Dean) involved the player’s name recorded as a back up goal keeper but he did not play in the game and that was the only time his name appeared on the score sheet. It was appealed that the inclusion of the player was a mistake. The player was charged with using a year of eligibility.
