CASE: Injuries Affecting Academic Performance

( Commissioner's Rulings )

June, 2001 - Commissioner's Casebook

(O.C. Art I Sec 5, 1.0)
A soccer athlete was injured in a car accident during the soccer season. After the accident she did not participate in any further games. During the same fall semester she withdrew from 3 courses and failed 1. In the winter semester she completed 2 courses and obtained a satisfactory standing as a part-time student. The commissioner was asked for a ruling regarding her academic eligibility the next fall.

RULING:

There was proper medical documentation to verify that her injuries prevented her from attending classes and it was verified she did not continue to participate in soccer. It was concluded that her injuries led to her academic deficiencies and with the spirit of inclusiveness from O.C. Art I Sec 5, 1.0, she was deemed eligible for the fall semester.

SEE ALSO: 2 similar cases and rulings (2001-02, Dean) involving a major injury due to accident and inability to maintain academic standards. The player was ruled eligible to compete in the winter after recovering from this injury in the fall semester.
