2008-09 SeasonSeptember 21, 2008 U of C Men’s Golf Eligibility, Trevor Edwards – September 21, 2008 - Trevor Edwards competed for Calgary at the ACAC South Golf Regional in Lethbridge on September 21, 2008. He finished 5th in the competition. Unfortunately, Mr. Edwards competed in that competition while he was ineligible. Mr. Edwards was a transfer student from the University of Houston. His Official Transcript had not been received by the ACAC Office prior to the September 21 competition. The ACAC Championships were held in Red Deer on September 26, 2008. Subsequent to the September 21 competition, Mr. Edwards’ transcript from the University of Houston was received by the ACAC Office. However, he was not allowed to play in Red Deer for the following reasons. Article I Section 5 Rule 1.5 of the ACAC Operating Code required the University of Calgary to have established that Mr. Edwards, as a transferring student, was academically eligible before he competed for the school. They failed to do so prior to September 21. Article I Section 13 Rule 1.2 of the Operating Code requires all participants to progress through their applicable Regional Championship Tournament. Unfortunately, given that Mr. Edwards was not eligible to compete during the South Regional, he is deemed to have not complied with Rule 1.2, thus rendering him ineligible to compete at the ACAC Championships. Article IV Section 1 Rule 1.13 requires the host Athletic Director (in this case, Keith Hansen of RDC) in conjunction with the SMT Convenor (Bernie Masterson), to confirm the eligibility of all participants by reviewing the eligibility certificates posted on the ConfLink eligibility system. This does not appear to have been done prior to the commencement of the ACAC Championships, with the result that Mr. Edwards began play before being removed from the course. This is regrettable; however, it does not relieve the University of Calgary from its obligations under Article I Section 1 Rule 1.5 above. As a result of its violation of the Operating Code, the University of Calgary is fined $200.00, payable forthwith to the ACAC Office. Bill Hendsbee |
