2010-11 SeasonJanuary 20, 2011 Facts: On January 15, 2011 NAIT’s S. Bowles (#21) received a major for body checking and a game misconduct. At the time of the penalty, there were approximately three minutes remaining in the third period. According to the referee, a SAIT player was violently thrown into the boards by Ms. Bowles. The SAIT player was injured and was helped off the ice and did not return to the game. The injured SAIT player was cleared by the team physiotherapist to play the following day. Ruling: Rule 8.4.4 applies to this situation. It reads as follows: A major and game misconduct penalty called as the result of an injury shall be subject to review by the Commissioner. The offending player may be subject to a suspension to be determined by the Commissioner… In terms of supplemental discipline, the severity of the injury and the amount of game time missed by the injured player are important factors. In this case, it is fortunate that the SAIT player was not injured severely and that she only missed 3 minutes of game action. Ms. Bowles automatically receives a one (1) game suspension for receiving a major/game misconduct during the last ten minutes of the third period. In this instance, I choose not to impose supplemental discipline. However, this incident will be taken into account should this player appear before me in the future. Ms. Bowles served her suspension on January16, 2011 vs. SAIT. Sincerely, Bill Hendsbee |
