2008-09 SeasonNovember 26, 2008 CUCA AD Bernie Masterson has initiated a formal complaint regarding a recruiting violation by the MacEwan men’s hockey program. Kiel Sonne and Mike Copeland played for CUCA during the 2007-08 season. During the summer of 2008, these two athletes approached the MacEwan head coach about playing for MacEwan during the upcoming season. Subsequently, both players did, in fact, transfer to MacEwan and are presently members of the MacEwan team. Both schools are in agreement that contact was initiated by the two students. CUCA’s complaint is that they were never contacted by MacEwan subsequent to contact between MacEwan and the two players, as is required by the ACAC Operating Code, Art. I Sect. 7 Rule 1.5.2. It is clear that the contact required by the MacEwan Athletic Director to the CUCA Athletic Director was not made. The failure to communicate was inadvertent as MacEwan had hired a new men’s hockey coach, who was unaware of Rule 1.5.2 and did not report the contact to MacEwan’s acting AD. Commissioner B. Hendsbee ruled that notwithstanding the lack of intent on the part of MacEwan, it breached the OC by failing to contact CUCA upon being approached by the two athletes. As a result, MacEwan shall pay a $200 fine, payable forthwith to the ACAC Office. (2008-09, Hendsbee) |
