2015-16 SeasonDecember 8, 2015Facts: NAIT has advised that it was informed by MacEwan that one of NAIT’s curlers, Brett Winfield, played at MacEwan for the past two seasons and was, in fact, academically ineligible to compete this season. Notwithstanding his academic status, Mr. Winfield competed for NAIT during the ACAC Fall Regional. According to NAIT, there was a flaw in their compliance process whereby NAIT employee completes the eligibility list and Mr. Meropoulis completes all transfer forms. In this instance, the employee recorded that Mr. Winfield had competed at MacEwan but she did not know that a Universal Transfer Form had not been completed while Mr. Winfield did not disclose to Mr. Meropoulis that he was a transfer student and that he was academically ineligible. Subsequent to MacEwan’s advice on Mr. Winfield’s academic status, a UTF was completed which confirmed that Mr. Winfield is academically ineligible. Ruling: Article I Section 5 Rule 11 of the ACAC Operating Code reads as follows: 11.1. Use of an Ineligible Student-Athlete It is clear that NAIT inadvertently violated Rule 11.1. The sanction for this violation is as follows:
