2003-04 Season
(O.C. Art I, Sec 14, 9.1, 10.2, 10.3)
A basketball coach received 2 technical fouls in the same game which resulted in a game ejection. The technical fouls were his 5th and 6th of the season. The coach was suspended for 1 game for the game ejection (automatic NCAA suspension), 1 game for the 5th technical of the season (automatic ACAC suspension), and one game for the 6th technical of the season. The dates to which the suspensions were to be served are at the discretion of the Commissioner (10.3). The first game suspension had been served but the coach requested to be able to do a special year-end awards presentation at the team’s next game. This was an issue because Article 1, Section 13, 13.1 states the suspended coach may not be present at the game 20 minutes prior to start time.
RULING:
The Commissioner determined 5 options for the coach to choose from:
- The coach participates in the next league game but must serve his suspension in his last league game and first playoff game.
- The coach serves the suspension in the remaining 2 games of the season and attends the presentations as long as they are completed 20 minutes prior to start time.
- Same as option 2 but the presentations are made at the conclusion of the game.
- The coach serves the suspension in the remaining 2 games and the presentations are switched to the team’s first home playoff game.
- The same as option 4 but the presentations proceed as scheduled without the coach in attendance.
