CASE: Special circumstances: Eligible Use of High School Athlete |
(
Commissioner's Rulings
) |
June, 1999- Commissioner's Casebook A hockey team had two goalies on their eligibility sheet. The main goalie suffered a major groin injury, so the backup goalie was used in replacement. The backup goalie had to go to court in another city and therefore could not play the following weekend. A student attending the high school directly affiliated with the college was available to play for them and had received permission from the student’s coach and the governing bodies of the league he played in. The player would only be used for the 2 games on the weekend where the backup goalie was not available. RULING: The 4 day eligibility certificate requirement was waived as per the O.C. (Article 1, Section 14, Ruling 10). Normally high school athletes are not eligible for ACAC competition, but due to the extenuating circumstances and the fact that the high school is directly associated with the college, the player was deemed eligible. It was noted that this ruling in no way was meant to set a precedent regarding the use of high school students in ACAC competition. NOTE: A similar case (2000-01, Meadus) regarding the use of high school athletes did not permit the use of high school athletes in ACAC competition. |
