June, 2006 - Commissioner's Casebook Shortly after the original eligibility certificates had been completed and submitted to the ACAC office, an athlete was added to a women’s volleyball team. The college neglected to complete and submit a supplementary eligibility form for this athlete. The athlete in question played in the team’s next match which her team won. This omission was later detected by the offending college and they submitted the supplementary eligibility form right away. The athlete did not participate in the following 2 matches of league play until she was deemed eligible to participate by the Conference. RULING: The outcome of the match stood as 3-0 for the offending college. While they did in fact play an athlete who was ineligible since her name did not appear on an eligibility certificate, it was deemed to be an oversight on the college’s part and not a deliberate attempt to play an ineligible player or to use a player before she was declared eligible to compete. The fact that the player was withdrawn from subsequent matches until she was eligible to compete supports the view that the participation of this athlete was in error and that an attempt was made to rectify the error as soon as it was discovered. |
