(O.C. Art I, Sec 5, 1.5.1.1)
A transfer student from a university outside of Alberta was ruled ineligible for the ACAC during the first semester because he did not have the required credits for a full year at the university he was previously attending. The athlete appealed the decision based on the fact that his reasons for leaving university were purely financial and not academic. The student was forced to move back home (to Alberta) at the recommendation of the counseling department at the university because of this financial situation. The student did not have the funds to support himself and as a result became ill due to improper eating and lack of nutrients.
RULING:
The student was ruled to be eligible to participate during the year in question after the university confirmed that the student’s GPA in the first semester met the minimum standards set down by the university despite his illness and financial difficulties. The student managed to obtain a GPA of 1.45/4.0 before being advised to withdraw due to illness and financial hardship.
