June, 1996 - Commissioner's Casebook
(O.C. Art I, Sec 5, 1.3.1, 1.3.2)
A student-athlete in his first year tried out for a college soccer team and final tryouts were not complete by the first league game. The athlete’s name was on the score sheet and he participated in one game before being released from the team. At the time he was unaware that he would be charged with a year of eligibility by participating in that one game. He made the team the next three years and competed for the college. The athlete wished to compete for an Alberta university and requested his first year of eligibility be reinstated so he would be eligible.
RULING:
Initially the student’s application for reinstatement of his year of eligibility was denied on the basis of the O.C. rulings 1.3.1 and 1.3.2. The student formally appealed to the ACAC Executive and his first year was reinstated.
