June, 2006 - Commissioner's Casebook
(O.C. Art I, Sec 3, 2.1, 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.1.3, 2.4)
An AD in attendance of a CCAA national championship game in which his college was participating failed to exhibit leadership and serve as a positive role model for his coaches and athletes. The assistant coach of the team was upset at the actions of the officials and was involved in a verbal and physical confrontation with the game officials, which culminated in the coach confronting the officials within the officials’ change room. The AD admitted to being “extremely upset with the situation that transpired on the court” and did not promptly remove the assistant coach from the officials’ change room. The AD also physically contacted one official in an attempt to separate him from the assistant coach.
RULING:
It was interpreted that the AD contributed to the explosive situation and failed to fulfill the expectation of a college AD to work with tournament officials and organizers to maintain and restore order as circumstances dictate. As a result, the AD was suspended from attending any CCAA national championship where he is considered to be in an official ACAC capacity. The suspension took effect immediately and expired after the final CCAA championship of the 1998/99 season.
