2010-11 SeasonApril 16, 2011 Facts: Brooke Olmstead played in four (4) games in the fall of 2010 as a member of the Briercrest Women’s Basketball team before injuries ended her season. Ms. Olmstead now seeks a ruling that she has not used one year of eligibility in relation to her participation last season. Ruling: Article I Section 5 Rule 1.3.5 of the ACAC Operating Code states as follows: A student-athlete who suffers a season-ending injury limiting his/her participation to no more than 30 percent of his/her league schedule, as documented by letter from the attending physician, physiotherapist, or chiropractor, and by letter from the Athletic Director(s) of the institution(s) concerned, shall be regarded as not having played in that year. Rule 1.3.5 requires an athlete to have competed in no more than 30% of her league schedule in order for the Commissioner to find that there has been a season ending injury. Ms. Olmstead played in four (4) of eighteen (18) league games, or 22%. Having not played in more than 30% of league games, Ms. Olmstead satisfies the above rule. I have been provided with a letter from Briercrest, as required by Rule 1.3.5, along with a medical report from Ms. Olmstead’s podiatrist, confirming that she sustained season ending injuries. Based on the above, Ms. Olmstead will be deemed to have not used a year of eligibility in relation to the 2010-11 season. Sincerely, Bill Hendsbee |
